How to sell on Depop UK as a beginner — the 2026 guide

Depop isn't Vinted. The buyer is different, the photos are different, the prices are higher, and the algorithm rewards completely different things. Here's how to start.

Depop vs Vinted — same items, different rules

Both are UK secondhand fashion marketplaces. That's where the similarity ends. Depop is closer to Instagram with a Buy button — it's a discovery platform built around aesthetic, where Vinted is closer to a wardrobe-clearout app built around search.

 DepopVinted
Buyer profileMostly 16–28, fashion-awareMostly 24–45, value-driven
Sweet spotVintage, Y2K, streetwear, designerHigh-street, kids', basics
Average sale price£15–£40£8–£20
PhotosEditorial / styled, often modelledFlat lay, clean
Fees10% selling fee (from buyer in UK, from seller elsewhere — varies)Zero seller fee, buyer pays protection
AlgorithmLikes, follows, engagementRecency, freshness, keyword match

If you sell the same item on both, expect to charge 30–50% more on Depop — but it'll take longer to sell.

What sells on Depop UK

What doesn't sell: cheap fast fashion that's already old (looks tired without aesthetic), basic high-street still in stock new, kids' clothes (use Vinted).

Setting up your shop

  1. Download Depop. Create an account.
  2. Pick a username that reads well as a shop ("@miareruns" beats "@m1a_91").
  3. Profile photo: yourself, well-lit, or a logo if you're going branded.
  4. Bio: 1 line on what you sell, 1 line on shipping. Skip the emoji wall.
  5. Link your Instagram if you have one — Depop's algorithm cross-references.
  6. Connect Stripe / Depop Payments. UK sellers use this by default.

The Depop aesthetic — why photos look different

This is the #1 reason new Depop sellers don't get sales. Vinted-style flat lay photos work on Vinted but get ignored on Depop. Depop buyers are looking at the feed like Instagram — they scroll, they like, they save, then maybe they buy.

Depop photo rules

  1. Photo 1 must be aesthetic. Modelled if possible. If not, hung against a clean wall, on a chair, on a styled flat lay. Natural light.
  2. Use the same vibe across your shop. Consistent background or filter. Your shop should look like one Instagram account, not 50 random photos.
  3. Photo 2 onwards can be informational — close-up of detail, label, any flaws.
  4. Avoid the white-background-on-the-bed look. It reads as Vinted, not Depop.
Style tip: Depop's most successful sellers shoot in batches — one Sunday, plan 20 outfits, take photos for all of them, list them through the week as they're ready.

Writing a Depop listing

Depop's title field is short — keep it punchy. Description is where you sell.

Title formula

[Era / style descriptor] + [item type] + [brand / colour]
ExamplesY2K cargo jeans, low-rise, blue Vintage 90s Nike windbreaker, blue + red Mesh long-sleeve top, white, oversized Carhartt detroit jacket, brown, M

Pricing for Depop

Depop buyers expect to pay more for the curation. Price 30–50% above the Vinted equivalent. For genuinely rare items, much more.

Use Depop's "make an offer" feature. Set your asking price 15–20% above what you actually want — most buyers will offer.

Shipping in the UK

Depop doesn't auto-generate labels the way Vinted does — you arrange shipping yourself. UK options:

Build the postage into your asking price ("free shipping") rather than charging it separately — Depop sellers who do this consistently see higher conversion.

Growing your shop

Depop has an algorithm that rewards activity. Here's what moves the needle:

  1. List 3–5 items a week consistently. Consistency > volume.
  2. Refresh old listings. The "refresh" button (visible on each listing) tells Depop to re-surface it. Use it weekly on items that haven't sold.
  3. Engage with other shops. Like listings in your niche, follow sellers with overlapping aesthetic. Depop is social.
  4. Use Stories (Depop has Instagram-style stories) — post packing, behind the scenes, new drops.
  5. Respond to messages fast — within an hour ideally. Depop ranks responsive sellers higher.

Depop fees explained

As of 2026 in the UK, Depop charges a 10% selling fee — but the structure changed in mid-2024. UK sellers now have no selling fee on most sales (the buyer pays a marketplace fee instead). There's still a small payment processing fee (~2.9% + 30p) on each transaction.

Always check Depop's current fee structure on their help page before pricing — it has shifted several times.

HMRC stuff

Same as every UK marketplace: above £1,000 a year in sales, you need to declare to HMRC. Depop reports to HMRC under DAC7. Full UK side hustle tax guide →

FAQ

Is Depop better than Vinted in the UK?

For Y2K, vintage and designer, yes — higher prices, more engaged buyer. For high-street and kids', no — Vinted moves faster.

Can I cross-post the same item on Depop and Vinted?

Yes. Most resellers do. Just remember to delete from the other platform when an item sells.

How long until my first Depop sale?

Variable. If your photos are aesthetic and your items are in-demand, often within a week. If your photos are flat-lay and your items are generic, it can take months.

Do I need to pay tax on Depop sales?

Above £1,000/year total marketplace income, yes. See the HMRC guide →

What's the Depop algorithm looking for?

Engagement (likes, follows, messages answered fast), freshness (refresh button), aesthetic consistency, and item demand.
